Bloom 2008 : Stereo MC’s Headline

Glastonbury weekend has come and gone and the good news is that it didn’t rain (too much)! That has to be a good omen for the rest of the UK festivals, so ditch the wellies for flip flops as August is going to be a scorcher!! There’s just over a month to the superb Bloom festival and to say that we are getting excited is an understatement. We’ve got four things to share with you so slap on your shades and read on…..

We are very very pleased to announce the Stereo MC’s as the Saturday night headline act at Bloom Festival this summer. The Stereo’s shot to fame in 1992 with their album “Connected” which reached number 2 in the UK Album Chart, and won them BRIT Awards for Best Group and Best Album. However, the Brixton Boys are back! Stereo MCs are all set to unleash their latest genre surfing opus, ‘DoubleBubble’, onto an unsuspecting world this summer.

Often labelled as one of the UK’s most iconic bands, and with Mercury nominations, those Brit awards and million selling albums behind them, the Stereo MCs are here once again to prove that they’re as innovative and relevant as ever. Formed around the core duo of Rob Birch and Nick Hallam in the late 1980s, Stereo MCs debut album ‘33-45-78’ was a raw document of its time.

Spliced beats and elementary production laid the foundations for a sound that gave British kids, turned onto the likes of Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions, a native source that spoke directly to them about their own lives. Follow up ‘Supernatural’s lead single ‘Elevate My Mind’ saw them becoming the first British band to hit the US pop single charts with a dance infused Hip-Hop track, as they channelled the Acid House vibe into the melting pot, before third album, the sublime ‘Connected’, propelled them to international prominence, gaining accolades from far and wide, including those two Brit Awards, and tours alongside the likes of Happy Mondays and U2.

Oh did we say that we are excited!? Also joining the Stereo MC’s on the bill are acid rave legends Altern 8. Altern-8 pushed their singles into the British charts with promotional theatrics and attention-getting chemical-warfare uniforms from head to toe. Originally formed by Mark Archer and Chris Peat as a side-gig from their Nexus 21 project, Altern-8 debuted with two EPs, 1990’s Overload and the following year’s Evapor 8. The singles “Activ 8 (Come with Me)” and “Evapor 8″ both nicked the rave-hungry Top Ten during late 1991 and early 1992, thanks in part to a variety of group sponsored, press-publicized half-truths.

The mini-LP Full On - Mask Hysteria followed later in 1992 before they disbanded a year later.

Already back in the live saddle for several years now with regular shows at raves like Bangface Altern-8 are back to take us to the light stick waving, Vicks Vaporub daze of the early 90s! Nice one, top one, get sorted!
